In just the past decade, LED lighting has evolved from an expensive and limited option to the most cost-effective and versatile product on the market, providing better illumination and energy savings. You can get LED replacement bulbs for nearly any existing fixture. Here are a couple of considerations to keep in mind.

If the fixture you’re upgrading is on a dimmer, make sure the LEDs are dimmable. The dimmer switch itself may also have compatibility issues. The same goes for photocells; you may need an LED-rated photocell when upgrading exterior lights.

In older high-output light fixtures (high-pressure sodium, fluorescent, and metal halide), a ballast functions to limit current so the fixture achieves the higher voltages needed to light the lamps. Make sure new lamps are compatible with the voltage and wattage requirements listed on the ballast. Some LEDs will work in those fixtures, but most require the ballast be disconnected or replaced.
